How Jim Did It by PHUZface1 How Jim Did It by PHUZface1
Yknow the opening bit for The Muppet Movie where you see Kermit sitting on a log and playing a banjo in the middle of a swamp? That was a real swamp. And Jim Henson was operating him in the swamp water. How was this possible? Well, Jim Henson was sealed in a large watertight container under that log, and was only able to breathe(and sing) from a tube that was cleverly disguised in the environment. And he could see what he was doing above water only through a little TV monitor.

This is what true love can do.

I did this with a lotta nasty fumy markers.

Kermit, The Muppet MovieŠJim Henson & Co.

"Rainbow Connection"
To be honest, I didn't know this song existed until 2 years ago, and I've loved that song ever since. Truly one of the greatest songs in film history. Jim gave it his all in this sequence, and that's what makes him more amazing. Well done Jim. :'-)

Somehow that doesn't surprise me. It sounds a lot like what the Big Bird costume was like, only less mobile.

To do something like this, just shows how dedicated this man was to his craft. I know if that had been me though I'd be scared witless! Lol. But I definitely give Jim his props for doing this very famous scene like he did. He's still sorely missed after almost 24 years.

Oh Jim,

Why have I taken you for granted? Why did it take the wonderful 2011 movie for me to discover you to late. When I was young, you were only a name. Now I see that you are still loved and that your love and dedication lives on through the preservation of your works. Now I'm starting to know you.

When a puppeteer seals himself in a watertight container at a real swamp for about 5 days to film to bring to life a sweet character, you know that's love.

Also, the bike scene... that's love too.

:) I didn't appreciate this man's dedication to his imaginative work until a few years ago. So yeah, don't get too down on yerself. There's so much work that goes into his creations. It's mind-boggling how he and his friends came up with solutions to their problems.

THAT BIKE SCENE WAS MIND-BLOWING. It still is!

I know. Same thing with Frank Oz, he once was "that guy who did Yoda and some of the muppets once."

Oh, and those scenes when Kermit is walking... on his feet.

And dedicated. How many media performers are willing to not only brainstorm such innovative techniques but also follow through with them themselves in order to ensure the Magic of the performance? Jim Henson was right to focus the audience's attention on his Muppets and not on himself or the performers. Doing everything possible to hide the performers in every possible setting is a key ingredient to the Magic.

I remember hearing about this, poor Jim I hope he wasn't claustrophobic, but then again I'm sure the puppeteers are used to that kinda stuff. :)Great pic.

I'm sure they were used to it- they were shoved under tables and stuffed under floor boards all the time. It comes with the business.
Thanks man:)

I definitely agree. There've been so many different versions of that song sung by other people, but none of them measure up to Jim Henson's version.
